The National Youth Philanthropy Clearinghouse was envisioned in an Association for Fundraising Professionals (AFP) Youth in Philanthropy Summit held in November, 2006. Leaders representing five interest groups: K-12 programs, collegiate programs, youth philanthropists, youth grantmakers, and youth-serving organizations came together to consider how to collaborate in their youth philanthropy programming and education.
As the participants engaged over the two and half days, six points emerged as areas of focus: collaboration, education, infrastructure, public awareness, research and resources. This Clearinghouse marks the first step towards achieve the goals for infrastructure which includes the need to communicate and collaborate in a virtual environment. This central source of information was considered a major component for future success in expanding youth philanthropy.
The Wilbur and Hilda Glenn Family Foundation have provided the initial funds to launch this Clearinghouse. Ongoing maintenance of the site will be conducted by Johnson Center staff and students of the Nonprofit Good Practice Guide.
The Johnson Center, in collaboration with the Summit participants, will explore additional funding opportunities to include interactive message boards, collaboration opportunities, volunteer matches and a catalogue of best practices.
